Obstacles Guide

Obstacles Guide

The Bottle Ship presents a fair share of obstacles and puzzles Samus will overcome during her investigations.

Regular doors will open automatically when approached, but Samus' arsenal and a good thinking cap will still be put to good use. Read on for more details.

Normal obstacles

In first-person view, players can identify where obstacles are placed in the environment and what weapon or ability is required to clear them. Simply enter first-person view and aim the target reticule at an obstacle. Hold B and wait for Samus to lock onto the yellow-outlined target.

The name of the effective weapon or ability needed will be presented on-screen (eg. Normal Bomb, Normal Missile, Speed Booster, etc.).

Destructible obstacles will be vulnerable to either Bombs, Missiles, Super Missiles, the Speed Booster or Power Bombs. Sometimes Morph Ball Bombs or the Charge Beam can be used on obstacles normally weak against Missiles.

Seeker Missile Doors

Later in the game you'll discover hatches sealed with multiple Missile pods, just like in the good old Prime days. Once the Seeker Missile becomes available, lock onto one of the pods on these hatches to automatically target all the rest. Fill the charge gauge and release a Super Missile into the first pod to deploy regular Missiles to every other target, destroying them all simultaneously.

Sealed Doors

Some doors will either seal shut as Samus enters a chamber, or players may find them initially locked. Often enemy encounters will trap Samus in a room and the doors won't unlock until she conquers every foe. Glowing orange doors are normally tied to a nearby control terminal, while doors that glow a solid red - even without enemy presence - may not open again (thankfully there's only one or two of those).

Sensor Switch

These round switches are linked to either a powered-down device or a locked door. Firstly, walk closer to the switch until it turns green. Once in range, enter first-person view.

Lock onto the switch and slowly energise it with several shots of Samus' beam weapon (a visible yellow bar on the switch fills up with each shot), or use a Charge Beam blast to energise it immediately. A fully-energised switch will unlock its paired device. Some switches are positioned behind glass windows, so naturally you'll need the Wave Beam to sneak a shot through and strike them.

Morph Ball Launcher

These small glowing sockets mounted in the ground can propel the Morph Ball across enormous distances. Simply enter Morph Ball mode, roll into the socket and lay a bomb to engage the device and send Samus on her way. For what purpose did these devices originally serve the scientists aboard the ship? They definitely give Samus a stylish ride. Some launchers won't be usable at first but will eventually activate later in the game.

Hologram Generator

Hologram Generators are rife in Sector 1. These sneaky masters of illusion alter the skyline of chambers to present a natural sky complete with clouds, a shining sun and sometimes even rain. Normally they're used to emulate a planetside environment for the local wildlife, but often they impede Samus' progress by hiding doors under a cloak of environmental deception. Find the generator by its tell-tale rotating yellow pylon, then walk up to the mounted terminal on its side to power it down.

Grapple Point

Grapple Points float silently in areas perfect for Grapple Beam antics. Once the Grapple Beam is authorised, enter first-person view and lock onto a Grapple Point. Press A to deploy the Grapple Beam and watch as the game returns to third-person view. While Samus is swinging back and forth, press A or 2 right after she passes the vertical position to detach and leap forward or backwards.

Cargo wall runner

Certain chambers are home to a wall-mounted horizontal cargo lift that Samus can hold onto as it travels along a metal track. These are normally used to transport Samus to out-of-reach areas. Simply jump up towards the orange handle bar to grab hold and begin the journey. Just watch out for any obstacles or enemies waiting along the track - clear them out before taking the ride.
