Metroid: Other M

The Movie

(The camera slowly moves toward a cluster of asteroids and space debris. Large blue energy particles streak through the debris, impacting several objects. A stylised human fetus is then shown within a nebulous environment. The camera zooms in on the child within, revealing it as a young Samus. As the young Samus opens her eyes, the cry of a Metroid is heard. The eyes morph into an adult Samus, wearing her Varia Suit)

Samus*: Why am I still alive?

(From Samus' point of view, she perceives an industrial environment. Her Energy Tanks are slowly recharging. The camera slowly pans away from Samus, showing her hanging in mid-air, held up by the massive infant Metroid)

Samus*: The baby...

(The colossal shape of Mother Brain - as her final boss form in Super Metroid - eventually comes into view. Mother Brain repeatedly fires at the infant Metroid. Samus' Energy Tanks continue to recharge. The infant Metroid completely restores Samus' Energy Tanks. It releases Samus and dives at Mother Brain, only to be struck by a fatal energy beam. Samus falls to the ground, reaching up to the dying Metroid. Samus hits the ground and slowly rises from the floor. The infant Metroid explodes, sending millions of particles raining down on Samus. Mother Brain advances on Samus, unaware of the danger Samus now poses)

Samus: Mother... Time to go!

(Samus prepares her Hyper Beam, intending to utterly destroy Mother Brain. The screen white-outs to the present. Samus is resting within a pristine laboratory, fitted with a respirator over her mouth. Her Varia Suit is deactivated, and her Zero Suit is visible. The respirator swings away from her mouth, and a video screen moves into position above her. A man wearing glasses appears on the video screen)

Head Quarantine Officer: OK, Samus. Everything's normal.

(Samus slowly opens her eyes)

Samus*: I awoke to the familiar voice of a quarantine officer.

Head Quarantine Officer: Let's try sitting up, huh? Slowly now.

(Samus begins to move her limbs, as though recovering from a deep sleep)

Samus*: A dream—I had been reliving the tragic moments of my recent past. Thanks to the Hyper Beam, which was given to me somehow by the baby, I laid Mother Brain to waste.

(A visual flashback is shown to the moment when Samus defeated Mother Brain. Samus' gunship rockets away from the exploding planet Zebes)

Samus*: And the explosion that followed destroyed planet Zebes, along with the remains of Mother Brain, the Space Pirates, and my long-standing nemesis, Ridley.

(Galactic Federation personnel are shown inspecting Samus' battle-damaged armour. The camera pans out from Samus' left eye, returning to the present)

Samus*: And the baby...

(Samus gets to her feet while two quarantine officers are watching her from an adjacent observation room)

Quarantine Officer: Come on, Samus. Let's go next door.

(Samus departs the lab and steps into a roomy chamber, devoid of any objects or inhabitants. The Head Quarantine Officer is watching Samus through a broad observation window)

Head Quarantine Officer: Right. Let's get started.

(Samus activates her Power Suit. The tutorial begins)

(After successfully performing a Sensemove against the Zebesian)

Head Quarantine Officer: OK, looking good.

(If the player dawdles)

Head Quarantine Officer: What's wrong? Not feeling so hot?

(Later in the battle)

Head Quarantine Officer: Now jump on its head!

(If the player continues to dawdle)

Head Quarantine Officer: Do me a favor. Quit kidding around.

(If the player tries to fire a Missile at the Zebesian)

Head Quarantine Officer: Ooh. Looks like he's had enough of your missiles!

(If the player continues to try firing Missiles at the Zebesian)

Head Quarantine Officer: I don't think those missiles are doing much good anymore!

(If the Zebesian falls to the floor, stunned)

Head Quarantine Officer: Samus, now's your chance!

(The following gameplay message appears on-screen)

LETHAL STRIKE
Press D-Pad toward a downed
enemy while pressing 1.
Once fully charged, you'll
launch a strong attack.

(After stunning the Zebesian, if the player dawdles)

Head Quarantine Officer: Quick, finish it!

(If the player continues to dawdle)

Head Quarantine Officer: You're buddy's just flopping around. Better put him out of his misery.

(After the Zebesian is defeated, blast shields lower down to cover the observation window)

Head Quarantine Officer: How about you try using a Power Bomb? This area's well fortified, so don't hold back!

(The following gameplay message appears on-screen)

POWER BOMB
Press A to change into
Morph Ball mode, then
press and hold 1 and
release when fully charged.

(If the player dawdles)

Head Quarantine Officer: What are you doing? Unleash that thing!

(After deploying a Power Bomb)

Head Quarantine Officer: Allow adequate room around you during Power Bomb play. All right, Samus. That's it for the test.

(Other Head Quarantine Officer dialogue. Note: Some of this dialogue may not be heard in the game)

Ooh. You're all out of missiles.

Don't waste your ammo.

Focus on aiming.

What are you looking at?

This out to be a piece of cake. Get it done.

Hey? What are you doing?

Ready, Samus?

Nice work! I, uh, wouldn't use that anywhere but here.

You getting tired? Maybe I should check your vitals...

One more time.

Remember, those aren't to be used lightly...

Don't use those when people are around...

What are you trying to do, incinerate me?

Instead of just standing there, how about trying to get some range?

Look, if you just stand there you're gonna lose sight of your buddy...

You want to be getting distance and readying a charge shot, don't ya?

(After the completion of the tutorial)

Head Quarantine Officer: Looks like you took quite a bit of damage. It's unbelievable how well you've held up.

Samus*: I wondered if this, too, was a result of the power the baby gave me.

Head Quarantine Officer: Right, you're due in the meeting room. The big dogs are waiting! I gave your suit a polish so you'd be at least somewhat presentable.

(The Head Quarantine Officer smiles somewhat creepily at Samus)

Samus*: Not even a fragment... None of the baby remained on me.

(She looks at the palm of her left hand)

Samus*: I knew it to be true but still couldn't help looking at my palm for a sign.

(Scene change - Samus is walking down a long empty corridor)

Samus*: Never again would I encounter the baby. Never.

(Samus stands within a blue scanning device. The device scans her, confirming her identity and unlocking a door)

Samus*: The finality of it struck me once again.

(Samus enters a darkened chamber. She is now standing before a large council of Federation officers)

Samus: Mission completed. The planet Zebes was annihilated... And all Metroids were exterminated.

(The crowd claps and cheers)

Samus*: A simple report, almost dull, even... but it felt momentous to me.

(Scene change - Samus' gunship is flying through open space. The camera shows Samus sitting in the cockpit)

Samus*: I don't know how much time passed since then. Days went by in their quiet way, and people's recollections of Metroids and Space Pirates grew nebulous over time, relegated to a past concern of the galactic communities... Nothing more than a faded memory.

(Samus' instrument panel lights up, alerting her to an incoming transmission)

Gunship instrument panel (not spoken): ALERT - Incoming rescue signal

Samus*: Code name: "Baby's Cry." A common SOS with the urgency of a baby crying...

(Samus taps the instrument panel, preparing to set a course)

Samus*: The nickname comes from the fact that the purpose of the signal is to draw attention. The signal was coming from a remote part of space.

Gunship instrument panel (not spoken): Incoming rescue signal - Seeking transmission source - Cosmos region A47 - Reef sector - Presence of space dust confirmed

Samus*: I altered the course of my ship as if this detour had already been part of my flight plan.

(Samus engages her ship's throttle)

Samus*: Baby's Cry...

(Her ship streaks forward into interstellar space)

Samus*: It was as though it was crying specifically for me...

(Game logo appears on-screen)

METROID

Other M

(A streak of light precedes Samus' arrival in a region of space filled with reddish-brown space dust. The instrument panel displays a long, bottle-shaped facility)

Gunship instrument panel (not spoken): Rescue signal origin - Model number - Unknown (destroyed) - Terraforming type - Accumulation of space dust/high density gas emissions - Shield leakage detected - Airtight colony - Bottle Ship - Rerouting - Destination - Bottle Ship - Generator at full power

(The Bottle Ship is shown, floating within a thick cloud of space dust)

Chapter 2

(Samus' gunship flies toward the Bottle Ship. Zigzagging throughout the ship's exterior hull, her ship eventually finds an open hangar bay. Her gunship touches down in the hangar bay. Samus exits her ship via the underside hatch. Samus walks up a steep ramp, eventually stopping as she notices another ship docked in the hangar bay. The following message appears on-screen in Search View)

POWER SUIT

Samus' basic suit.

(Story screen update)

The threat of Metroids and Space Pirates had
seemingly disappeared from galactic society...
Samus receives a distress call known as a "Baby's Cry"
while flying through space.
Something stirs within her, and Samus sets out for the
distress call's source, a decommissioned facility called
the BOTTLE SHIP.
When she arrives, a Galactic Federation ship is already
on the scene.

(Samus eventually rushes into a warehouse chamber, where six fully armed Galactic Federation troopers are trying to break through a door. Several troopers aim their weapons at Samus as she scans them. One trooper steps forward, ending the quick standoff)

GF Trooper: Ah... Fancy meeting you here, Princess.

(The trooper presses a button on the side of his helmet, causing the visor to swing up, revealing his face)

GF Trooper: Remember me?

Samus: Anthony...

(Samus relaxes her stance)

Samus*: There's only one person who calls me "Princess."

(Anthony casually forces the other troopers to lower their weapons)

Samus*: And that person is Anthony Higgs of the Galactic Federation Army.

Anthony: Haven't seen you since that last mission. Hey, and your buddy's here too!

(Anthony gestures toward another soldier. The camera focuses on his stern-looking face)

Samus*: Adam Malkovich. A general in the Galactic Federation Army. Not only a trusted confidant but also my former superior officer.

(Flashback to a scene from Samus' past. She is fighting on a desert planet alongside Adam and other Federation troopers)

Samus*: Yes, there was a time when I was enrolled in the Galactic Federation Army.

(Flashback scene change - A young Samus stands before a military-uniformed Adam)

Samus*: And then I... Well, I was young and inexperienced... As the result of a certain incident, I left Adam's command and set out on my path as a solitary bounty hunter.

(The figures of Adam and young Samus walk away from each other. The scene returns to the present, showing Adam's still-stern face)

Adam: What are you doing here?

Samus*: The first words out of his mouth were typical, coming from Adam. To answer his question, I recounted the details of what had brought me to this place, and then I asked what circumstances led the Federation here.

Adam: That information is not for an outsider.

Samus*: The word he so obviously chose, "outsider," pierced my heart.

(Another trooper stands up from his work on the blast shielded-door. He salutes Adam)

GF Trooper: Commander, we're all prepped!

(Samus and the troopers step back from the door. A beeping sound precedes an explosive device detonating on the door. The smoke settles, revealing the blast shield untouched by the explosion)

GF Trooper: Ahh. No dice! I think our only option is to use the laser to slowly burn our way through. This is gonna take a while...

Anthony (to Samus): The electrical system here is out, and we can't get the barrier wall to open. We tried using explosives, but it's tricky to pull of without collateral damage. What we need is some way to focus the power onto one centralized location...

(While looking at the blast shield, the following gameplay message appears on-screen)

LOCK ON
Press and hold B and point at your
target to lock on.

(After locking onto the blast shield, the following gameplay message appears on-screen)

NORMAL MISSILE
Press A and release immediately
while locked on.

(Samus destroys the blast shield's lock with a Missile. The other troopers look stunned, and Anthony stifles a laugh. The demolitions trooper manually pries open the blast shield, unlocking the door beneath)

GF Trooper: Let's go.

(All troopers except Adam and Anthony depart)

Anthony: All right. I'm gonna go on ahead.

(Anthony leaves, followed by Adam)

Samus*: Adam hadn't authorized it, but I decided to remain on-site for the sake of the others.

(After regaining control of Samus, the following message appears on-screen)

Samus has decided not to
use bombs or missiles until
Adam authorizes them.

(If the player tries to use Morph Ball bombs, the following message appears on-screen)

Adam has not yet authorized
the use of bombs.

(Story screen update)

Before long, Samus encounters a group of soldiers led
by her former commander in the Galactic Federation
forces, Adam Malkovich.
Among the soldiers is her old friend, Anthony.
Although she's unable to to ascertain Adam's true motives
on the BOTTLE SHIP, she decides to stay.

Chapter 3

(Samus arrives in the Bottle Ship control room, catching up to Adam and his troops. A large eyeball is watching the group from above. The corpse of a scientist is found in the control room, covered in sickly green wounds)

GF Trooper: He's dead. Someone—or something—attacked him...

(The body suddenly twitches, causing everyone to step back. A large purple bug scurries out from under the body. One of the troopers is obviously not fond of insects, and kicks the bug away)

GF Trooper: Get away from me!

(He opens fire on the bug, laughing maniacally. Another trooper stops the outburst)

GF Trooper: Lyle! Enough!

(The control room falls silent)

Samus*: It was obvious that there was some pervasive danger throughout the facility. I didn't know what had brought Adam here, but I did know that cooperation was imperative if we were to restore safety.

(Samus turns her attention to Adam)

Samus: Adam, listen to me. Clearly, this facility is in complete disorder. It might be too dangerous for your men to go alone. That's why I've—

(Samus is interrupted by a sudden movement on the wall. Hundreds of small purple bugs are covering one wall of the chamber)

GF Troopers: Look at that! They're everywhere! They're coming out of the walls!

(All the troopers lower their helmet visors, ready for battle. The bugs begin to coalesce around a giant eyeball. The gigantic mass falls to the floor, scattering the troopers)

GF Trooper: Look out! Everyone back!

(The bugs complete their gathering to create the Brug Mass)

Adam: Open fire!

(Random trooper dialogue during the Brug Mass boss encounter)

Bring it on!

Go go go!

Have some of this!

(After using the Sensemove in first-person view to dodge the Brug Mass)

Anthony: This ain't good! Nothing's working!

Adam: Listen up! Freeze guns authorized!

(The troopers all deploy their Freeze Guns and shoot ice at the Brug Mass)

Adam: And Samus, I'm authorizing missile use.

(New ability activated - status screen update)

NORMAL MISSILE

Controls: Press A while locked on.

(Later in the battle)

Adam: Concentrate fire in a single location and freeze that thing! And, Samus, you attack the frozen spot!

(Once the Brug Mass has been frozen and immobilised)

Adam: Now! Use your missiles!

(After destroying the Brug Mass' first arm)

Adam: Keep targeting!

(After the Brug Mass' second arm is frozen)

GF Trooper: Take it down!

Chapter 4

(Upon defeating the Brug Mass)

GF Troopers: All right! Woohoo! Everybody OK? I'm fine, but did it have to be bugs?

(Adam steps toward Samus, raising his visor before speaking to her)

Adam: Samus. Looks like I'm going to need to ask for your cooperation on this mission. But... I'm also going to have to ask that you follow my commands. You don't move unless I say so. And you don't fire until I say so.

(Adam lowers his visor. A flashback occurs, to a mission briefing somewhere in Galactic Federation HQ)

Adam: Any objections, Lady?

Samus*: The thumbs-up sign had been used by the Galactic Federation for ages.

(Several troopers stand before Adam, each with one hand held in a thumbs-up position. Samus stands at the far end, and offers a bitter thumbs-down)

Samus*: Me, I was known for giving the thumbs-down during briefing. I had my reasons, though... Commander Adam Malkovich was normally cool and not one to joke around, but he would end all of his mission briefings by saying, "Any objections, Lady?"

(During the scene, Adam can be heard giving mission orders)

Adam: We need to gather all the information we can, but priority one, is to find any survivors, and bring them to safety.

Samus*: He was joking, but others weren't... At the time I felt surrounded by people who treated me like a child or used kid gloves because I was a woman.

(Samus is shown standing in front of Adam)

Samus*: And yet, with Adam, I was grateful for the nod... My past has left me with an uneasy soul, and as a result, it touched me on some level that Adam would acknowledge that past by calling me something delicate—like "Lady." And I knew more than anyone that every word from Adam was deliberate. My thumbs-down was a twofold response—a sign of derision at being called a lady, and a signal of my complete understanding of the mission orders. The other soldiers were always willing to support me with easy smiles despite the fact that I clearly had so much yet to learn. Among them was Anthony.

(Anthony, along with the other soldiers, are laughing at Samus' thumbs-down)

Samus*: In the face of his well-meaning behavior, and that of the other soldiers, my response was to become increasingly bitter. I was a child, always with something to prove. A chip on my shoulder.

(Flashback scene change - Samus is briskly walking through a bustling corridor, where the setting sun can be seen outside)

Samus*: And I was angry. I felt that if I let my guard down, I would easily be broken. And beyond that, I was scared.

(She stops to look out the window, where a huge city stretches into the horizon)

Samus*: But even in the naivete of my youth, I could see in Adam's joking manner how close he felt to me.

(Samus is now standing at the window, with her left hand pressed against the glass)

Samus*: Adam knows my past. And he knows me better than anyone else.

(Samus is now looking at her own reflection in the window)

Samus*: Confession time. Because I was so young when I lost both of my parents, there's no question I saw Adam as a father figure.

(Adam is shown in his office, working on a document. He stands and walks to a window. A portrait of Samus awkwardly posing with an unknown man, and Adam in the background, can be seen on his desk)

Samus*: When I rebelled against him, I knew I could get away with it. And his paternal compassion in the face of my rebellion reinforced the special bond I felt with him.

(Adam is now looking out the window, lost in thought)

Samus*: I understood well that chances were slim that I would ever find anyone that understood me like Adam.

(The camera flies through the city, zooming into the Galactic Federation HQ building, right up to Samus as she stares out the window)

Samus*: And yet... When the time came, I still left his side. I was so young. Young and naive...

(Samus, looking troubled, walks off-screen. The scene returns to the control room aboard the Bottle Ship. The Brug Mass has left no remains, and Adam is now speaking to everyone from an overhead command station. He's removed his helmet)

Adam: Exactly what transpired here on the BOTTLE SHIP is still uncertain. Here's what we do know: the equipment we thought had been destroyed is operational again, and we've seen casualties attributed to an unidentified and lethal creature. The situation is critical. We need to gather all the information we can, but priority one is to find any survivors and bring them to safety. Consider this site extremely dangerous. Be careful as you make your sweeps. And there's one problem.

(The troopers sharpen their attention on Adam)

Adam: The wireless interference in this facility is all-pervasive. Your comm systems are useless. As a result, communication channels will be limited to the facility's navigation booths.

(Adam prepares to deploy the troops)

Adam: Well then... Lyle! Investigate Sector 1. And show a little restraint with the explosives.

K.G.: Got it!

Adam: Each of you is authorized to use a freeze gun. Do not forget to check in regularly via navigation booths. And, Samus. You go to the System Management room. Do everything you can to get the electrical system back up and running.

(Samus nods in acknowledgement)

Adam: Looks like your comm system is still functional.

(Samus' point-of-view can be seen on a video screen in front of Adam)

Adam: Remember, everything you see will also appear on this screen. Regarding auxiliary weapons, the use of bombs has been authorized. As far as your other weapons go, we will continue to investigate and authorize use as we can. However... We currently have no plans to authorize the use of Power Bombs. As you know, they have the ability to spread a high-temperature heat wave over a large area, impacting living things...

(A short scene demonstrates the might of a Power Bomb)

Adam: which is a nice way of saying they can vaporize humans instantly. You should be well aware of how dangerous Power Bombs are and how their devastation can't be obstructed with common materials. Once the mission in the System Management room is complete, I need you to report back. I'll give you your next orders then.

(Adam addresses everyone present)

Adam: I want you all to be especially careful as you execute your missions. That's the end of the briefing.

(The troopers all give the thumbs-up signal)

Samus*: It was the first joint mission I'd been a part of since becoming a freelance bounty hunter. And, of course, it was the first time since my Federation days that I was following the orders of a commanding officer.

(The troopers load their gear and depart)

James: Let's go!

(Samus walks around the creature. It turns and shrieks at her. Adam radios in)

James: Hey, Samus.

(A commotion is heard, and three other Federation troopers arrive)

James: Where's Lyle?

Anthony: Looks like he's late.

Maurice: Huh?

(Maurice opens his visor and steps toward the computer workstation. He begins tapping on the keyboard)

Maurice: Hey, the CPU seems to have self-destructed... The central system is broken into parts, but... I think I might be able to restore it and recover some of the data. Let's try it.

(By now, everyone is standing around Maurice. Anthony steps away from the computer)

Anthony: ...Like the CO said, there might be some pretty crucial information hidden here. Well, while Maurice here is working his magic, the rest of us should search this building, am I right?

James and K.G.: Got it!

The terraforming capsule colony designated as BOTTLE SHIP is currently under the administration of the Galactic Federation. The ship supports animal specimens from various ... the purpose of biological-weapon research. There were originally two other BOTTLE SHIP, designed for use by interplanetary colonists by the Space Development Corporation. After long years of use, the first two ships were retired, and the remaining ship was given to the Galactic Federation. After extensive refitting, the ship was made able to sustain three distinct closed habitats, each designed to preserve various specimens collected from different planets for research and development in military-technology applications.

The first such atmosphere is BIOSPHERE, designed to sustain organisms from warm and humid habitats. The structure of each sector is centered primarily on a cavernous dome. In order to maintain the structural integrity of the whole within the limits of material strength, each dome structure is divided into 4 blocks, for a total of 12. The connective strength between each block is reinforced by the injection of high-density polymers into the gaps between ... Transportation of personnel is handled through ...

... of space sector A47 (hidden reef sector?) ... conducted through ... will be waiting ... the pallet launched by the mass driver ... specialized mass catcher, provided as supplies ... this vessel. Finally, if the Bottle Ship is ever compromised, emergency transmissions to other planetary settlements, space vessels, or space stations are strictly forbidden. This facility is designated as a fully independent research laboratory by special decree of the Galactic Federation.

Dr. Madeline Bergman, Development Director

Maurice: This BOTTLE SHIP is under management of the Galactic Federation. In these facilities, life-forms from each planet have been raised and researched as possible bioweapons. Site Manager and Development Director: Dr. Madeline Bergman.

(Samus reacts to the revelation of the Bottle Ship)

Samus: Adam, was the Galactic Federation experimenting with bioweapons?

Adam: Looks like it.

Samus: Use of bioweapons is strictly prohibited.

Adam: Of course it is. What's happened here is illegal.

Samus: Who is Madeline Bergman?

Adam: Must be the person in charge here. Is that all you've got?

Samus*: I didn't need to press Adam about it any further. I knew his mind. Not only was he a strong opponent of bioweapons, he was against the use of living things for unnecessary reasons, period.

(Samus walks to the window overlooking the Biosphere Test Area)

Samus*: Life, no matter what form it takes as it's born into this often cruel universe, should not be tampered with... That was Adam's philosophy. In bringing the infant Metroid back, I did something that I know would have gone against his convictions. And, though I might have been left alone, it was a clear and blatant violation of protocol. I wondered what Adam thought of me... Out of nowhere, I suddenly found myself concerned with his opinion again.

(Back to Maurice at the computer)

Maurice: I've almost gotten it completely restored. But I'll bet they've protected this thing with a seriously sophisticated security system. If I can't get past it, James, that'll be where you come in.

James: Leave it to me. Shouldn't be a problem to hack into this thing. I mean, it might tell us what exactly was going on here. Looks like this might take some time, though.

Anthony: Madeline might still be somewhere in this building. Keep scouting for more intel. Let's go!

(Story screen update)

After meeting up with Anthony and the others at
the Exam Center, Samus discovers a Zebesian with
cyborg characteristics.

Chapter 8

(Samus finds a group of live Zebesians and is quickly backed into a corner. Anthony and the other soldiers rush to her aid. She motions for them to stay away)

Samus: Step back!

Adam: I want all the soldiers to evacuate this area. Samus! Your orders are to take care of all enemy targets!

(The door closes, locking Samus in with the Zebesians)

Anthony: Samus!

Chapter 9

(After the battle with the Zebesians, Samus hears an explosion and runs to the Exam Center's observation window. She sees the troopers far below, fighting a large, hairy, purple monster)

GF Trooper: Look, up there!

(The monster advances on the troopers, shrieking, and shrugging off their machine gun fire)

GF Trooper: Get away!

(The creature rears its head back and looks up at the observation window. Samus quickly runs off-screen to evac the Exam Center)

GF Trooper: Over there!

(Samus sprints outside, finding the troopers shooting at something up on the side of the building. Anthony tries to stop Samus, but to no avail. The creature leaps down off the building, pinning Samus to the ground. Several Reo and Griptians emerge to fight the troopers)

GF Trooper: Up there up there! Look out!

(The creature holds Samus firmly down. The troopers continue to struggle with the Reos and Griptians)

GF Trooper: Everyone, uh! Behind us!

Chapter 10

(After Samus leaps down a tall elevator shaft and enters Sector 3, she steps forward, finding evidence of the purple monster's former presence in the area)

Samus*: It was clear that the Galactic Federation was developing bioweapons on the BOTTLE SHIP. I wonder if Adam came here knowing that. Regardless, I knew I had to talk to the person in charge, Madeline Bergman. Of course, she would have to be alive in order for me to do that.

(The Exam Center explodes, collapsing into a pile of rubble. Samus enters Sector 3 proper)

Samus*: The woman believed that the Galactic Federation was sent to the BOTTLE SHIP to keep those in the know from leaking information about the project.

(Flashback scenes show recent events)

Samus*: And no wonder—she'd been attacked by someone wearing a Galactic Federation Power Suit. And she implied that Maurice was killed by another soldier. Considering the mortal danger we'd survived together, I had to agree with her. There was a traitor among us.

Adam: Samus. The wavelength of that monster's cry is driving the other creatures into a frenzy—they've grown markedly more aggressive. It appears to be hiding in Sector 3 now. Take the elevator ahead of you to the Main Sector. From there, head to Sector 3. If you run into that thing, hit it with your Plasma Beam. You've got to take it down!

Samus destroys the robot, but its operator gets
away.
A shaken Samus receives new orders from Adam to
resume the chase of the ferocious creature and head
to Sector 3.

(While riding down a nearby elevator)

Samus*: With those creatures, crafted into killers, running free, the BOTTLE SHIP had been turned into a nightmare replica of Zebes... and then here came Adam and the others.

(Scenes showing the 07th Platoon's arrival aboard the Bottle Ship accompany Samus' monologue)

Samus*: At this rate, the plan the Federation wanted to keep so secret would be revealed. So they sent in an assassin. Someone to wipe out any survivors as well as anyone who learned about the secret project. K.G., James, Anthony, and... Adam. Could one of them really be a traitor? Until I found out who it was, I decided to call the traitor the Deleter.

(The scene returns to Samus aboard the elevator)

Samus*: On top of everything, I started to think about that woman.

(Flashbacks of recent events accompany the monologue)

Samus: Was she the one who sent the distress signal? And could she be the person in charge here: Madeline Bergman? Either way, I knew I had to protect her. She would be targeted again. And she wasn't the only one in danger. I, too, would be considered a threat here.

GRAPPLE BEAM

Effect: Attaches a ropelike beam to a Grapple Point.
Controls: Lock on a special target and press A.

Anthony: Phew! That was ugly. Thanks, Princess. So, you get called out here too?

Samus: Called?

Anthony: Commander gave us a new directive to move as a unit. Our gather point was the navigation booth near here, but when no one showed, I figured I'd just take a look around. That's when I got jumped by those things you just saw.

Samus: What was your unit directive? I'm tracking that monster.

Anthony: We were heading to the Geothermal Power Plant to open the magma-eruption port. Gotta restore the power in this place so I can see that pretty face of yours. Yeah... It seemed a little excessive to send the whole unit to do it... but he's the commander. He must've had a reason.

Samus: Hm.

(Samus steps away from Anthony)

Anthony: So, Samus, how you feeling about the commander, huh?

(Samus turns to face Anthony. A flashback commences. A massive caravan of starships is seen flying over a nearby planet. A Federation military vessel is hauling a civilian spacecraft, which is in turn attached to a large drive unit. Inside the bridge of the military vessel, Adam, Anthony, a younger Samus and a number of officers watch a large viewscreen)

Ship computer: Ian has arrived at the drive unit.

Male Federation Operator: Ian, be careful out there. I know this is a routine fix, but don't let your guard down. There are 300 people on board—their lives are in your hands.

Ian: Roger that.

(The following messages appear on-screen above the video feed of Ian. First, the top-left corner of the screen)

Electrical charge pressure regulator
Coolant circulation system functionality
Control rod operation system
Pressure regulator
Air regulation system
Automatic fire extinguishing system

(Second, the bottom-right corner of the screen)

Drive unit system check
Normal mode: OFF ...

(Ian lowers his helmet visor and taps at a keyboard. Aboard the military vessel, red warning lights suddenly accompany a blaring alarm. The following message appears on the ship's instrument control panel)

DANGER

Vessels in vicinity of the drive unit must relocate immediately

Female Federation Operator: Commander! The drive unit is going critical!

Male Federation Operator: The unit is overheating beyond our estimates, sir!

Samus: Ian!

Male Federation Operator: Commander Malkovich! Unit meltdown imminent! It's going to explode!

Adam: Prepare to disengage the drive unit immediately!

Female Federation Operator: But Ian's still inside!

Samus: Adam, I can reach him! Give me the order, please!

Adam: Lock and secure the shielding doors now!

Samus: Adam, wait! There's still time! I can make it! Please let me go! I mean... That's Ian! That's your little brother out there!

Male Federation Operator: We're out of time, sir!

Samus: Adam, please! Let me go! You have to trust me! Just give me a chance!

(Adam hesitates)

Adam: Commence drive-unit disposal immediately. That's an order.

(Samus narrates the rest of the flashback)

Samus: Adam was right. If we had waited any longer, it would have meant the end of those we had come to rescue and the end of us as well. I knew that, but...

(The drive unit begins to explode. The military and civilian vessels detach from the drive unit and escape to a safe distance)

Anthony: At the very least, you wouldn't be standing here now. That's what the commander was most scared of.

(The drive unit explodes. The portrait on Adam's desk at Galactic Federation HQ is shown - the man next to Samus was Ian, Adam's younger brother. The scene returns to Samus and Anthony on the Bottle Ship)

Samus: ...I was childish. No one should have to make the choice that Adam did, and yet all I could do was question his authority and make things more difficult.

Anthony: Hey, you were just a pup then, and the commander knows it. Look, forget it. Sorry for hitting a nerve. We'd better get going anyhow.

(Anthony steps away from Samus, but stops)

Anthony: Man... if something like that happened now... Huh... Best just forget about it. I'm out.

(Anthony casually salutes Samus and departs)

Samus*: I knew the question Anthony was suppressing. And I knew the answer. If something like that happened again, I would hold fast to that glimmer of hope and try for redemption. That's who I am.

(Story screen update)

As she moves through Sector 3, Samus encounters
Anthony as he's being attacked by a group of
creatures.
Anthony and the other soldiers had received an order
from Adam to restore functionality to the

(Soon after, upon entering a large facility at the top of a glass tunnel, the following text appears on-screen)

GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT

(Samus walks inside the inner chamber of the Geothermal Power Plant. She steps onto a large platform and someone aims a laser pointer directly at her. She aims at the Federation Trooper on the other end of the laser pointer. It's Anthony)

Anthony: Samus! Get outta the way!

(Samus leaps over to Anthony's position behind a pillar. Anthony tries to target a creature flying around the chamber)

Anthony: Man! Can't see a thing in here. We gotta clear out! Where's the exit at?

(After Samus spots the exit, a plume of fire rains down and destroys the walkway leading to the door. The creature continues to circle the chamber)

Anthony: We're stuck—this ain't good. Well, only one thing to do, huh? Let's tear this thing up!

(Samus stops him)

Samus: Wait! Anthony! Leave this one to me! Don't waste your plasma!

(Upon entering first-person view on the darkened platform)

Adam: Samus, blast the eruption port to get the magma flowing!

(After targeting the eruption port)

Adam: Use your Super Missiles!

(Once the eruption port is open, lava pours into the chamber. The lava brightens the room. Samus runs to the center, looking for the creature. The creature lands atop the platform and slowly stalks toward Samus. It's Ridley! Samus is frozen, unable to move due to the shock of seeing Ridley again. Ridley airs his lungs and roars at her)

Samus: Ridley?!

(Samus is briefly visualised as the little girl she was when she lost her parents)

Samus: Help!

(Samus returns to her normal appearance, but still struggles to react. Ridley continues shrieking. Adam is watching the scene from the control room)

Adam: Huh? What the—? Samus! Do you copy? Samus! Samus! Use your Plasma Beam!

Samus: No!

Adam: What's your status?!

Samus: It can't be!

Adam: Samus! Do you read me?

(Adam senses the presence of someone. A shot is fired, and Adam's earpiece comlink falls to the floor. The scene returns to the Geothermal Power Plant)

Anthony: Samus!

(Ridley grabs Samus, pinning her arm cannon down. Samus' armour begins to dematerialise)

Anthony: Let her go!

(Anthony aims his plasma gun at Ridley's face. Ridley flies into the air, still holding onto Samus. Her armour completely disintegrates. Anthony fires his plasma gun at Ridley. In the confusion, Ridley drops Samus. She plummets to the ground and barely manages to reactivate her armour in time)

Anthony: Hey! Hey, punk! Don't you know how to treat a lady?!

(Ridley moves in to strike at Anthony)

Anthony: Man! You got no style! I think I got to teach you a lesson about subtlety. Come on!

(Anthony's plasma gun begins to charge, and Ridley swoops in)

Samus: Anthony, don't do it!

(Anthony back-flips over an attack by Ridley)

Anthony: Hunh! Come on!

(Ridley sweeps his tail around and strikes Anthony, knocking him off the edge of the platform)

Samus: Anthony!

(Anthony falls toward the lava, and Samus regains her composure. She activates her Plasma Beam to fight Ridley)

Samus*: I wondered if Anthony was conscious as he hit bottom... Unbearable thoughts welled up in me, making me want to get as far away as I could. I regretted not being able to protect him... and I regretted thinking, even for a moment, that he would betray me or fail to come to my aid at the expense of his own safety.

(Story screen update)

Samus' anger returns her to her senses. She attacks
Ridley with wild shots from her Plasma Beam, but he
manages to narrowly escape.

Chapter 18

(Later, during the elevator ride to the Main Sector)

Samus*: Something was gnawing at me. Communication with Adam had ceased. From the Deleter's point of view, Adam would represent the largest threat.

(A fast-moving camera view is shown sweeping through the Main Sector)

Samus*: Without question, his life had to be in danger. But it was Adam Malkovich—he wouldn't go down easily. And Adam would already know about the Deleter, so there's no way he would let his guard down. If that was the case, then... Why couldn't I reach him? What did he think of the unfolding situation... and what was he planning to do next?

(The fast-moving camera continues its journey through the Main Sector, eventually reaching Adam in the command station)

Samus*: My racing thoughts started to frustrate me...

(Story screen update)

Stricken with grief and remorse, Samus is further
bewildered by the lack of communication from Adam.
Driven by anxiety, Samus sets out for the Main Sector.

(Soon after, Samus tracks the Deleter to the Bioweapon Research Center. A nearby computer boots itself up)

Samus: Huh?

(The glowing computer draws Samus' attention. The computer screen reads "Bioweapon Research Center Database." Samus attempts to log into the system, but to no avail. A nearby door opens, and the survivor from Sector 2 walks into the room. She spots Samus and gasps, then quickly hides in the room and locks the door. Samus walks to the door)

Samus: I'm not a member of the Galactic Federation. I came here because I intercepted the distress call. I'm a bounty hunter. And I know that something is after you. Please, you must believe me.

(The door opens, and the girl looks up at Samus)

Samus: Thank you. I'm Samus Aran. What's your name?

Survivor: Madeline... Bergman.

(Madeline invites Samus inside and explains the situation aboard the Bottle Ship. Madeline sits on a crate while Samus paces around)

Madeline: Behind closed doors, the Galactic Federation was trying to create a special forces-unit composed of bioweapons. In order to make it happen, they were attempting to create an organization modeled after the Space Pirates, with the Zebesians at the center. But, because of a certain... presence, the life-forms became ferocious. We were no longer able to control them.

Samus*: By a certain presence, she must have meant Ridley.

Samus: So you sent out the distress signal even though it endangered your life?

Madeline: I had to. I felt there was a real danger here. That if left as is, the Zebesians would continue to evolve and resurrect as real Space Pirates.

Samus*: If that danger was real, then the risk of withholding information to protect herself was too great, clearly. And yet... Wasn't she the one who set the facility's system to self-destruct? In silence I praised her courage and sense of responsibility.

(Madeline remains seated, looking down in silence)

Samus*: At the same time, her argument had some holes.

(Flashbacks are shown to Samus' first encounter with live Cyborg Zebesians. It looks like a feed from a video camera. "All warning systems functional" is overlaid on the screen)

Samus*: Say that the Zebesians, under Ridley's influence, became super-aggressive... Would that really lead to the resurrection of the Space Pirates?

(The camera switches to different scenes of Cyborg Zebesians and empty, messy laboratories. Each camera feed is identified as "CAM" 003, 007, 012, 017, 019, 015 and 005)

Samus*: Without a malicious force to lead them down that path, wouldn't they continue to merely follow their instincts, ultimately becoming no more than a swarm of feral creatures?

(An exterior shot of the Bottle Ship is shown)

Samus*: Regardless, it was clear that the Galactic Federation was ready to consign their enormous mistake to oblivion. And that's why they sent a Deleter. And as for Madeline and others who knew the secret?

(The scene returns to Samus and Madeline)

Samus*: But wait—there was another inconsistency in her story...

(A hypothetical scene is shown, depicting the Galactic Federation launching missiles at the Bottle Ship, destroying it completely)

Samus*: Why go to such lengths at all? With just a small flexing of the Galactic Federation's military force, they should have been able to destroy a facility of this scope with ease. So why didn't they...?

(Madeline raises her head and stands up, facing Samus)

Madeline: Actually... There was an even more dangerous plan... Come with me.

(Madeline and Samus depart the room and walk to the computer next door. The beginning of the scene is shown from the point-of-view of an observer up above a balcony. The observer is likely the Deleter. Madeline sits down at the computer and logs into the system. The login screen reads as follows)

Metroid Militarization Plan
(PMW: Project Metroid Warriors)

Concerning the feasibility of Metroids as military bioweapons.

(Samus is shocked)

Samus: What?! That's not possible! The Metroids were terminated along with Zebes.

(She recalls the baby Metroid's last moments)

Samus*: Yes... And the last of them, the baby, met its end above my head...

(Madeline pipes up)

Madeline: You're Samus Aran, right? The one who annihilated the Space Pirates? ...Metroid remnants were attached to your suit when you returned from Zebes.

(Visual flashback to two Federation technicians inspecting Samus' battle-damaged armour)

Madeline: They were reproduced from a piece of cell structure salvaged by the Federation, and they are in this facility.

(Samus recalls the Quarantine Officer)

Head Quarantine Officer: I gave your suit a polish so you'd be at least somewhat presentable.

(Samus clenches her left hand)

Samus: And Ridley in the same way...

Madeline: At first no one thought that the creature was Ridley.

(Visual flashback to Ridley's infant form, at the moment Samus discovered him)

Madeline: They didn't think it had potential as a bioweapon at all. They raised it like a pet, calling it "little birdie." Until one day...

(Flashback scene change - the Breeding Room. A scientist looks for little birdie)

Madeline: It attacked one of the researchers and got away. Ridley had played dead and lured the scientist into his cage. What was left... It was a horrible sight.

(Ridley lunges at the scientist. Soon after, Madeline is briefly seen observing the cage from the outside, while other scientists attend to the body of their colleague. Someone steps up to Madeline from behind and puts their hand on her left shoulder. The scene returns to Samus and Madeline)

Samus: But in order to control Metroids, you need Mother Brain's telepathy. You don't... You didn't re-create a Mother Brain clone, did you?

(Madeline shakes her head, no)

Madeline: It's artificial intelligence.

(She looks up at Samus)

Madeline: We developed an AI program that would reproduce Mother Brain's thought processes.

(A computer representation of a brain is shown among flickering scenes of a human eye)

Madeline: We called it "MB."

Samus: But it was just a program. It wasn't the mother herself.

Madeline: MB evolved as it communicated with the Metroids. It appears as though it began to become self-aware... much like the original Mother Brain. It's really quite remarkable...

Samus*: That's when it became clear to me just why Madeline was so afraid of the Space Pirates' resurrection. It wasn't that her story had holes in it—through the holes were glimpses of the danger that was right before her eyes. If everything she said was true...

(Samus turns to face Madeline)

Samus: Where are the Metroids and MB?

(Madeline taps on the keyboard. A new login screen appears on the monitor)

Samus*: If the situation were left alone, galactic society would be put in peril. Even the ringleaders of the operation wanted to avoid that, but they still wanted the Metroids. And that's why...

(The closed entrance of Sector Zero is shown)

Samus*: They decided to capture the Metroids contained in Sector Zero... and "delete" the rest of the facility, including the Space Pirates, Ridley, and everyone who knew the secret.

(A montage of Cyborg Zebesians, Ridley and Madeline is shown. The flashback of the 07th Platoon's dropship is shown, flying toward the Bottle Ship. Close-ups of Adam are shown)

Samus*: But before the ringleaders could act, Adam appeared. Adam might have known or suspected the truth about the facility from the beginning. Regardless, since the ringleaders were members of the Galactic Federation, they could no longer act recklessly.

(The Deleter is shown)

Samus*: And so a Deleter was installed as a member of Adam's team to destroy evidence and plan each subsequent move.

(Some of the Deleter's activities are shown)

Samus*: But having me added on as a member must have disrupted the Galactic Federation's plans.

(Samus' gunship is shown flying toward the Bottle Ship. The scene returns to Samus and Madeline)

Samus: Madeline, thanks for telling me all this. I've got to destroy the Metroids and MB in Sector Zero. You have to remain hidden.

(Madeline slowly stands up and looks at Samus, almost hesitantly)

Samus: Don't worry. The Galactic Federation CO who's here now will help you.

(Samus puts her hand on Madeline's right shoulder as a reassuring gesture)

Samus: You're safe.

(Madeline looks up)

Madeline: Does that CO happen to be Commander Adam Malkovich?

(Scene change - Samus is now riding an elevator. A flashback to her departure from Madeline is shown, along with a fragment of a report)

theory is ... so we cannot guarantee accuracy above ... With that in mind, what follows are ...

Author: Adam Malkovich

Madeline: The real leader of this operation is Commander Malkovich. I can't believe that he's here.

Samus: Stay here until I return.

(Samus departs the room and Madeline senses the presence of an observer. The Deleter steps down a ramp and walks toward Madeline. Madeline turns around and looks at him. A single gunshot is heard. Meanwhile, Samus returns to Sector 1. Story screen update)

Samus tails the soldier and finally arrives at the
Bioweapon Research Center deep in Sector 1, where
she encounters the mysterious woman again.
The woman identifies herself as the person in charge
of the facility, Madeline Bergman, and divulges all of
the secrets of the operation there.
Madeline claims that Samus herself had been the key
to re-creating the Metroids and that the person who
first ordered the weaponization of Metroids in the
project was Adam.
Samus sets out for Sector Zero to destroy the
Metroids and the AI that controls them, MB.

Chapter 19 / 20

(On the way to Sector Zero, Samus defeats Nightmare. She then enters a narrow corridor. Suddenly, the ship begins to shake as the engines roar to life)

Samus: What?

(Samus steadies herself as the ship continues to shake. Story screen update)

Along the way, the systems on the BOTTLE SHIP
suddenly reboot, and the propulsion system starts
working.
Which way is the ship heading?
What's happened?
With these questions rattling around in her head,
Samus continues on.

(Later, Samus finds an infant Metroid at the entrance to Sector Zero)

Samus: A baby...

(Flashback to SR388, at the moment the infant Metroid hatched before Samus. The scene returns to the present, as Samus hesitantly takes aim at the infant Metroid. She resolves herself to shoot the infant, but is hit in the back with a Freeze Gun blast before she can fire. Her suit slowly dematerialises, and disintegrates completely as she falls to the floor. Now with only her Zero Suit, Samus is at the mercy of the infant Metroid. It bares its tiny fangs and tries to attack her, but is hit with another Freeze Gun blast. The attacker walks to Samus. An exterior shot of the Bottle Ship shows large panels extending from the hull. Samus is now sitting up against a wall. A Federation Trooper kneels down beside her)

Adam: Samus. Can you hear my voice?

(Samus is breathing heavily, trying to recover from the attack)

Samus: I read you loud and clear, Adam...

(She looks up at Adam's face)

Adam: You know what lies up ahead: the Metroids and the artificial intelligence that controls them. The fruit of the Galactic Federation's twisted project.

Samus: Yes... So why did you shoot me?

Adam: You can't destroy these Metroids.

Samus: What... do you mean?

Adam: Sector Zero Metroids most likely can't be frozen.

Samus: What are you... talking about?

(A Metroid hovering within a specimen tank is shown)

Adam: There's a strong likelihood that the Metroid's mortal weakness, the vulnerability to cold, has been overcome through genetic manipulation.

(The Metroid changes to a blue colour)

Adam: And if that's true, there's no way you can destroy them.

Samus: But that baby earlier... The infant Metroid—you were able to freeze it!

Adam: True. My guess is that it was because it was still in a larval stage, but who can say?

Adam: One thing's for certain—they're definitely propagating Metroids.

(The frozen infant is shown, slowly crumbling to pieces. The lifeless Gigafraug found in Sector 2 is then shown)

Adam: Developing bioweapons with an obvious and fatal flaw would be suicide.

(The blue Metroid appears in a specimen tank, and violently hammers the glass, cracking it)

Adam: It's hard to imagine the military mass-producing defective weapons. Then again, none of this makes sense. Metroids are lethal—their extinction was a wise decision.

(Adam holsters his Freeze Gun, takes his assault rifle, and stands up)

Adam: And now, since no one has the technology to defeat them, they cannot be allowed to exist.

Samus: Hang on, Adam. First I need to know why you're credited as the creator of the Metroid military program report.

(The brief snippet of the report, transcribed earlier, is shown. Adam turns to look at Samus)

Adam: I received the request to write the report from Galactic Federation headquarters. In that report, I outlined the potential dangers of such a program and explained categorically why it shouldn't be attempted.

(He turns away from her and walks away)

Adam: HQ listened. But a small group within the Federation co-opted my report for its own purposes.

(Outside, lights begin to flicker on all over the Bottle Ship's hull. Inside, the entrance to Sector Zero lights up as well)

Adam: Samus. You'll be fully recovered soon.

(Adam turns around to face her again)

Adam: I have several missions for you. This facility appears to be on an intercept course with Galactic Federation HQ.

(The Bottle Ship is now moving, leaving the dust cloud)

Adam: If what Madeline Bergman said is correct, there's a distinct possibility that this is the start of an attack by MB against the Federation. One way or another, some sort of attack is clearly imminent. You have to find a way to divert the ship off its intercept course. I've located a survivor in Room MW toward the rear of the Bioweapon Research Center. Whoever it is will be a key witness. Secure the survivor's safety. And defeat Ridley. He's as much of a threat as the Metroids. And one last word of warning. Madeline Bergman... is no ally.

(Adam cocks his rifle and walks toward Sector Zero. Samus painfully stands up)

Samus: Hold on, Adam. What are you planning to do with the Metroids here in Sector Zero?

Adam: Leave it to me. I'll deal with this place.

Samus: You have a plan for dealing with Metroids that can't be frozen?

Adam: ...Sector Zero has a self-destruct protocol. If the sector receives a significant amount of damage, the unit is programmed to detach and self-destruct. A powerful explosion will eliminate the Metroids and MB without leaving a trace.

Samus: Don't you dare, Adam! Let me go in! I'm the only one who has a shot against the Metroids. We have to take the chance! Please, Adam!

(Flashback scenes to a younger Samus during the drive unit incident intermix with the present)

Samus: You have to trust me! You have to trust me. Just give me a chance!

(She lurches forward and Adam catches her arm)

Adam: Samus. I wish I could battle Ridley, but I can't. Unlike you, I'm no galactic savior. I'm merely human. But I can save you. You should be completely healed soon. There isn't much time.

(The Bottle Ship continues to accelerate into deep space)

Adam: We both need to get started on our missions. I'm sorry for getting a little rough with you.

(Adam's reflection is shown in Samus' left eye)

Adam: Good luck, Samus.

(He readies his rifle and walks toward Sector Zero. Samus runs after him as her suit begins to reintegrate)

Samus: Wait! Adam! Wait! Adam!

(Adam enters Sector Zero and the door locks behind him. A screen displays the status of the door)

SECTOR ZERO MAIN AIRLOCK
STATUS: OUTER DOOR LOCKED

Locked

(Samus reaches the door and pounds her fist on it)

Samus: Please wait! Adam! Adam! Adam!

(An inner airlock opens and Adam steps into Sector Zero. Samus is still pounding on the locked door. Adam turns around to face her)

Adam: No objections, right, Lady?

(Samus stops pounding on the door. Her eyes are filled with tears. She slowly raises her right hand and gives Adam a thumbs-up, but quickly changes it to a thumbs-down. Adam nods in approval, and turns around, intent on destroying Sector Zero. The inner airlock closes, and Adam disappears. Samus is distraught - tears fall from her eyes and she refuses to move. Seen from outside the Bottle Ship, a series of clamps release Sector Zero)

Bottle Ship P.A. Announcer: Emergency in Sector Zero. Disengaging unit.

(The scene returns to Samus. She walks away from the door and hears a loud explosion outside. Flashback scenes of Adam are shown)

Samus*: Adam vanished. My best friend, the person who understood me best... the closest thing to a father I had. Thoughts swirled through my head—I couldn't come to grips with what had happened. Such a cruel way to say good-bye. I was the only one who witnessed Adam's last moment, and though it shook me, I was calmer than I usually am. I think Adam granted me that eye-of-the-storm clarity—his final gift to me.

(The scene returns to Samus)

Samus*: There was no time for me to grieve his death. But there was time for me to say: Adam, thank you... Leave the rest to me.

(Her suit fully reactivates. Upon regaining control of Samus, story screen update)

Samus hesitates to attack a baby Metroid that
suddenly appears, and when Adam uses a freeze
gun to stop her, she collapses with Sector Zero right
before her eyes.
Adam was not the ringleader of the plot.
Adam knows the Metroids in Sector Zero can't
be frozen and decides to destroy them using a
self-destruct protocol, which he activates,
causing Sector Zero to detach and explode
while Samus remains safely behind.
Samus watches him go to his death, but finally
understanding his intentions, she overcomes her
sadness and heads toward Room MW, which he pointed
out just before he met his end.

Chapter 21 / 22

(Samus returns to the Bioweapon Research Center and discovers the body of a Federation Trooper where she spoke with Madeline. She rolls the body over, revealing the identity of the Deleter)

Samus: James!

(She stands up and notices an open door that was once covered by a Power Bomb blast shield pod)

Samus: Huh?

(Story screen update)

According to Adam, the BOTTLE SHIP is heading
toward the Galactic Federation headquarters.
Deciding that she still has some time, Samus elects to
search for survivors before doing anything else.
While heading for Room MW, Samus enters the
Bioweapon Research Center. She sees the dead body
of James, but Madeline is gone.

As she approaches Room MW, Samus finds Ridley in a
shocking state.
Samus is astonished; Ridley seems almost mummified.
Believing that there still might be survivors, Samus
heads toward Room MW.

(Later, upon entering a large dark chamber filled with six empty specimen tanks, the following text appears on-screen)

Chapter 24

(Samus destroys the Queen. The survivor emerges from her cell, and escapes the room. Story screen update)

Samus finds an unidentified woman hiding and
trying to muffle her breathing in one of the storage
rooms in Room MW.
Samus' relief at finding the woman is cut short as
the Queen Metroid suddenly appears before her.
Samus and the queen fight a vicious battle. The
BOTTLE SHIP has almost entered Federation space.
Suddenly, the BOTTLE SHIP starts to rapidly
decelerate, and Samus has her chance.
Samus readies herself for death before launching a
final Power Bomb, killing the Queen Metroid.
The female survivor survives the battle but escapes
as soon as it ends. Samus pursues her.

(Samus gives chase, and eventually catches the survivor in a large room)

Survivor: Don't come any closer!

(The survivor tries to open a locked door)

Survivor: Don't come any closer! Stay away from me...

Samus: Easy. I won't come any closer until you say so. My name is Samus. I'm an independent bounty hunter. I know the situation here, and I know how you must feel. I'm here to secure your safety.

(The survivor calms down, but is still breathing erratically)

Samus: May I come closer?

(The survivor nods. Samus steps toward her)

Samus: What's your role at this facility?

Survivor: I'm responsible for all operations. My name is Madeline Bergman.

Samus: Wait a minute. I met another woman who called herself Madeline Bergman. What's going on here?

(The real Madeline touches a tag on her coat. A small holographic display containing her portrait confirms her identity)

Above individual ...

Madeline: What you met was MB. She's an android. She was created with the intellectual data of Mother Brain and consequently developed Mother Brain's consciousness as well.

Samus: What?!

Samus*: The Federation's foolish plan...

(Quick flashbacks are shown to the moment when Samus spoke with MB)

Samus*: Mother Brain's rampage... Everything that happened here was just as Madeline—or rather, MB—had told me. The person who sabotaged the system to stop MB's rampage and sent out the distress call had to be the person standing before me—it had to be Madeline Bergman.

Madeline: MB was the artificial intelligence originally developed to regenerate and control Space Pirate special forces.

(A large brain in a vat of liquid is shown)

Madeline: Because we wanted it to control these special forces through telepathy, we were forced to model its infrastructure after Mother Brain. At that time, MB didn't have a human form.

(A computer model of a human female is shown)

Madeline: Before long we started to see the viability of creating Metroid clones. Once we did... MB started to take on her current shape.

Samus: But why?

(A computer simulation of a Metroid is shown, floating in front of the silhouette of a human female)

Madeline: Because we needed the first Metroid hatchling to recognize MB as its mother, she had to take on the form of a living thing. With that as our theoretical basis, we were able to create the ideal relationship with the Metroid. One that wasn't based on dominance or control.

Samus*: I remembered the baby hatching before my eyes.

(A flashback to Samus' battle with Mother Brain is shown)

Samus*: When it attacked Mother Brain in order to save me—that was the result of the kind of ideal relationship they were trying to develop with MB. They found the perfect means of control and started propagating Metroids in Sector Zero.

(A holographic display of Sector Zero's details is shown)

Samus*: At the same time, they were conducting genetic-manipulation experiments to create unfreezable Metroids.

(A readout and wireframe of a Metroid is shown)

Common name: Generic Metroid
Size: Length 1.5 m
Classification: Metroid subspecies; able to endure frigid temperatures

Samus*: Apparently the queen I met earlier was the first of these propagated Metroids to mature.

(A wireframe model of a Queen Metroid is shown)

Samus*: They wanted to preserve her as a control specimen, so they had left her genes unaltered.

(Text accompanies the wireframe model)

Common name: Queen Metroid
Size: Height 6 m / Length 11 m
Classification: Final evolution of Metroid with an ovisac

(The scene returns to Samus)

Samus*: The fact that she'd grow into a queen was something not even Madeline and her team could have predicted. Only special infants had the genetic coding to become queens.

Madeline: Once our MB was in a human form, she excelled. As an interface between us and them, her skills with personal interaction humanized her to a great extent.

(A flashback occurs to a time when MB was working with the Bottle Ship's scientists)

MB: If my theory is correct, this is going to be a ground-breaking multi-system for artificial intelligence.

Scientist: Fascinating!

(Madeline continues her narration)

Madeline: Her confidence was unwavering, and her ability to learn was greater than we'd expected. But then...

(The scientists and MB are shown in a meeting room. MB is agitated)

MB: ... and we waste time even talking about it! ...

Scientist: Whatever this theory is ancient.

MB: ... I will show you! I will complete this system all by myself!

(Madeline continues narrating)

Madeline: She developed emotions. Then a nascent sense of herself. She began asserting her own thoughts, and her opinions began to contradict ours. It's quite typical for artificial intelligence to evolve as a result of self-analysis. However, there's no precedent for an AI like MB developing emotions.

(A computer simulation of MB hovering before a swarm of Metroids is shown)

Madeline: It's possible that her interactions with the Metroids brought it about, but we don't know for sure.

(MB is shown with an infant Metroid)

Samus*: The newly hatched infant took to her like his mother... and perhaps at that moment, MB began to develop a soul.

(The scene returns to Samus and Madeline)

Samus*: It was all conjecture... but the idea wouldn't leave my mind.

Madeline: And that was when we decided to alter her AI program.

(Another flashback, showing MB admiring herself in a reflection)

Samus*: A humanlike existence... But one without feelings. To make MB less than human, the researchers had to deny her that consciousness. I knew this... but in my heart, I felt sympathy for MB.

(Flashback - a scientist is walking toward the Breeding Room, flanked by two technicians)

Madeline: On the day we were going to alter MB's program,

(MB is watching Madeline and other scientists attend to the body of their colleague who was attacked by the infant Ridley. The first scientist steps up behind MB, and puts his hand on her left shoulder)

Madeline: right before my eyes...

(The scientist and technicians restrain MB and take her into custody)

Technician: Come on! Come on!

MB: No! Stop!

Madeline (narration): I watched her being restrained.

(Madeline and another scientist burst into the room)

Madeline: Stop! What are you doing to her?

Scientist: These orders are from above. Take her away!

Madeline: MB!

Scientist: Wait!

MB: Madeline!

Madeline (narration): She reached out to me and asked me for help.

Technician: Calm down!

MB: No!

Scientist: Take her away!

Madeline (narration): But there was nothing I could do...

MB: Wha... What's happening?

Madeline (narration): My presence that day caused a disturbing reaction in her.

(The technicians take MB outside. The scene returns to Samus and Madeline)

Madeline: She was fixated on me...

Samus*: Madeline had taken to calling MB "Melissa."

(Flashback scene change - MB is still admiring her reflection. Madeline enters the room)

Samus*: She took the initials MB and told the AI they stood for Melissa Bergman.

Madeline: Oh, Melissa! It looks great on you!

Samus*: MB liked that name—it made it sound like Madeline was calling her her daughter.

(Flashback scene change - MB goes rogue, and knocks the two technicians and the scientist away)

Samus*: Once she felt abandoned and hunted by that same Madeline, MB telepathically commanded the special forces to revolt. The facility fell into complete chaos and suffered widespread damage.

(MB is now seen inside the Main Sector. She commands a swarm of Cyborg Zebesians to wipe out a group of scientists. She laughs at the carnage. The scene returns to Samus and Madeline)

Madeline: MB was trying to get revenge on the Federation Army... and on us. It's possible all humans have become the target of her hatred.

Samus*: With the Space Pirates under her control, she was able to propagate the Metroids in Sector Zero, even creating a Queen Metroid.

(A flashback scene shows MB, now alone, planning an attack against Galactic Federation HQ)

Samus*: She was well armed and planning her attack on the Galactic Federation. But Adam and I crushed her plan completely. And now... who could guess where she was and what she planned next?

Madeline: She's backed into a corner. And her hatred is entirely focused on you and me right now... Huh?!

(Madeline stares in shock at something across the room. Samus whirls around to find MB standing only a few meters away, pointing a Freeze Gun at them)

Madeline: MB!

(Samus instinctively aims her arm cannon at MB and protects Madeline)

Madeline: Wait... MB. Calm down. Please, listen!

(Madeline rushes out from behind Samus)

Samus: Madeline! Step back!

(Madeline is now slowly moving toward MB)

Madeline: You... I mean, we were wrong. It's all over.

Samus: Madeline!

(MB continues to brandish the Freeze Gun. Samus is forced to aim at her)

MB: I was not wrong. The humans were foolish, and I was forced to bring judgment on them. And yet because of you... I failed. You must understand the weight of your crime. You must pay the price for what you've done.

(Madeline continues to step closer)

Madeline: Please, MB. We have to get past this.

MB: No. You will all be judged.

(MB raises the Freeze Gun, ready to fire. Madeline is now right in front of her)

Madeline: It's OK now. I won't ever fail you again. I promise... I'm so sorry, Melissa.

(MB recalls a happier time with Madeline)

Madeline: Oh Melissa... It looks great on you...

(A computer screen displays her human name: Melissa Bergman)

Madeline: Melissa Bergman... That's your name.

(Back to the present, MB seems to soften her resolve. She lowers the Freeze Gun. Suddenly, her hairpin flies off her head, and MB lunges at Madeline. She pushes Madeline across the room, where Samus safely catches her. A Freeze Gun blast then flies at MB from the entrance of the chamber - the projectile scores a hit and freezes her solid)

Madeline: Melissa!

(Suddenly, six Galactic Federation troopers storm into the room)

GF Trooper: Let's go! Move!

(They all run at Samus and Madeline, surrounding them)

GF Trooper: Don't move!

(Samus swings her arm cannon around at all the troopers. The troopers train their weapons on Samus and Madeline. Across the room, MB begins to thaw out. She revives herself and throws the Freeze Gun toward Madeline. It skids along the ground and crashes into the wall beside Madeline. Obviously unhappy with the Federation troopers, MB growls and telepathically locks the doors of the chamber)

GF Trooper: Wha... What's that sound?!

(Round pods up on the walls of the chamber begin to glow red, and the troopers all aim their weapons at them. Samus joins in)

GF Trooper: What's that? There, over there!

(The six pods open, revealing enormous insect-like monsters beneath. The creatures fly down from the walls and attack the humans. All the troopers open fire.

GF Troopers: Go! Now! Shoot it!

(MB telepathically signals for a group of Ghalmanians and Mighty Griptians to reinforce the giant insects, known as Desbrachians. Meanwhile, the battle is not going well for the Federation troopers. Their weapons seem to have zero effect on the Desbrachians. Samus carefully chooses her moment to intervene)

Samus: Madeline. Stay close to me!

(Samus fires at a Desbrachian with a charged Plasma Beam shot. It takes a hit and whirls around to attack Samus)

Reunited with Samus in the Bioweapon Research Center, she explained what really happened in the BOTTLE SHIP.

(After Samus targets MB)

Madeline: Stop!

(Madeline is holding the discarded Freeze Gun, pointing it at MB. She closes her eyes and fires. The shot streaks past all the troopers and Desbrachians, and strikes MB directly. MB is frozen again. A Federation colonel suddenly appears)

The Colonel: Fire!

(Several more Federation Troopers appear on an overhead balcony and cock their rifles. Madeline and Samus look on in shock. All the troopers open fire, sending a hail of bullets directly at the frozen MB. The bullets rip through her, unfreezing MB. She screams and falls forward onto the floor. The Colonel seems pleased with himself. Madeline however, is not. She drops the Freeze Gun in horror)

Madeline: No!

(Without MB to control them, all the Desbrachians deactivate and retract into their shells. Madeline sobs uncontrollably as she steps toward MB's body)

Madeline: Melissa!

(The Colonel rides down an elevator transport and observes the aftermath of the battle. Several troopers arrive and corner Samus. Madeline is now on her knees beside MB's body)

GF Trooper: Wait! Don't move!

(The Colonel walks toward Samus, carelessly crushing MB's hairpin. Madeline continues to grieve)

Madeline: Melissa!

(Some of the troopers aid their fellow wounded squadmates)

GF Trooper: Hey, are you OK? Hey, man down over there too! I'm getting you out of here!

(The Colonel reaches Samus and pushes a trooper aside)

The Colonel: Samus Aran. I heard what happened. You performed admirably. You can leave the rest to us.

(The Colonel walks away. Two troopers help Madeline stand up)

GF Trooper: Come on! Get up now!

(Samus won't let them take her away)

Samus: Madeline!

The Colonel: Wait. Aran. Unfortunate, what happened to Commander Malkovich. And to think that his entire unit was annihilated... Truly a tragic day... Would you agree, Aran? Sadly, with them gone, you're just an outsider.

(He points at Samus harshly)

The Colonel: And given your unofficial status, I cannot allow you contact with the witness. With your predilection for transporting illegal cargo, like infant Metroids, I must ask that you restrict your—

(The Colonel chuckles. Samus is disappointed)

The Colonel: Time for the lady to go home. Someone escort her!

GF Trooper: Yes, sir!

(A trooper steps forward and takes Samus by her left arm)

GF Trooper: Time for us to go. C'mon, Princess.

(Samus look up at the trooper. He looks back at her, and Samus' eyes light up)

The Colonel: Wha... Stop right there! Who are you?

(The trooper raises his helmet visor. It's Anthony!)

Anthony: Anthony Higgs, sir. Galactic Federation Platoon Seven.

(Anthony salutes the Colonel. Other troopers look on in confusion)

Anthony: I need to secure the safety of any survivors—Commander Malkovich's orders, and the purpose of this mission.

The Colonel: What?!

Anthony: Authorized by the chairman of the Galactic Federation, of course.

The Colonel: What do you mean, the chairman—

Anthony: ...But man, you guys made it here quick! I mean, if I hadn't stopped the engines, we might've missed each other.

(The Colonel grumbles. Anthony turns and gives Samus a warm thumbs-up. She happily nods. Samus' gunship is then seen departing the Bottle Ship, with Samus, Anthony and Madeline all safely aboard. Inside the cockpit, Anthony recalls his amazing escape from the Geothermal Power Plant)

Anthony: Crazy... Crazy how something good can come out of something bad.

(A flashback scene then shows what happened to Anthony. As he fell toward the lava, a Magdollite emerged directly beneath him. Thinking quickly, Anthony shoots the Magdollite with his Freeze Gun, granting him a safe platform to land on. His plasma gun's back-pack falls into the lava. The scene returns to the cockpit)

Anthony: Whoa. Didn't mean to wake her. Guess I oughta be quiet...

(Madeline is shown across from Anthony, fast asleep)

Samus*: Anthony was trying to be courteous to Madeline. She was exhausted and had only just fallen asleep. She needed the rest. She had a lot of explaining to do once she got to Galactic Federation headquarters. For herself and for Melissa.

Anthony: Still can't get my head around it... What a crazy mission...

(The camera pulls back, showing the exterior of Samus' gunship)

Samus*: Anthony sighed as he muttered to himself.

(Samus' gunship enters hyperspace, and flies through regions of space filled with space dust. The space dust forms images of MB and an infant Metroid)

Samus*: What would have happened if we hadn't been called there? Might the furious MB have attacked the Galactic Federation and brought about its utter destruction? Melissa wasn't insane, no... One day, a consciousness simply bloomed within her. And those that caused it to bloom—the humans—called it insanity. "I was the insane one."

(Back inside the cockpit, Madeline is still sleeping)

Samus*: That was what Madeline muttered softly as she sank into sleep.

(The gunship instrument panel displays the text "Cosmos region A47")

Samus*: The selfish conceits of humans drove MB to violence. It was their distorted perceptions and greed that awoke such fury in the fledgling girl's heart. Her thought was to punish the foolish and conceited. But MB could not complete her mission. As Melissa, she was defeated.

(A large cloud of space dust form's MB's face. The Bottle Ship is then shown, not far from a planet)

Samus*: With their one vulnerability overcome, the Metroids were indestructible. If some fool, just following orders, had taken the savage creatures to those who sought them...

(Samus' gunship is now flying past space dust. The dust forms an image of Adam)

Samus*: I can't imagine what would have happened if Adam hadn't recognized the looming danger. But the cost was far too great. Why did Adam have to pay with his life? For me, I couldn't believe he was dead.

(Space dust forms a portrait of Adam, wearing his military hat)

Samus*: For the first time, I questioned his choice.

(The gunship flies through a final cloud of space dust. This one is shaped as Samus' helmet. The ship distorts the dust, and the dust reforms to become Samus' head without her suit on)

Adam: "No objections, right, Lady?"

(The image becomes solid. Samus is now standing in Galactic Federation HQ, looking out at the cityscape sunset. She is now wearing a green outfit)

Samus*: I heard Adam's voice in my head, and I knew in my heart that he had made the right decision, just as he had so many years ago. In that moment, I swore not to grieve his death. And for the first time, I gave him a thumbs-up—just in case he was watching over me.

(Looking out the window, Samus gives Adam a thumbs-up. The shadow of an arm making a thumbs-down appears on a nearby wall. Anthony steps forward)

Samus*: His amused expression looked as though he wanted to say something. His face and Adam's swirled together. That last smile as Adam drifted away...

(Samus playfully pushes Anthony, and he gently taps her shoulder before walking away. She ties her hair into a pony-tail, before taking one last look out the window. Samus walks away and the camera zooms out from the building, through the air and up into space. The credits roll)

(Adam is reading the real Madeline's document on his computer screen, and is watching Samus speak with MB)

Adam: No! Samus!

Samus (to MB): Don't worry. The Galactic Federation CO who's here now will help you.

(Adam hastily gathers his weapons and runs out the door, intent on stopping Samus from entering Sector Zero. The scene returns to Samus holding Adam's helmet. She grips the helmet tightly in a tender moment. Suddenly, without warning, red lights flash throughout the Bottle Ship and a blaring alarm sounds.
